Re: Want To Receive Promos Early? Join The NEC's Paid Promo List
I don't know why I let myself get dragged into this debate again (well I do actually, I'm on holiday, weather's shit and I'm bored) seeing as I've not bought a record made after 99, or a hardcore one since 97. You might be right with the digital thing, but I'm not sure how many 'up and comers' will want to give music away for nothing seeing as they all think they're the next Hixxy and are therefore worth it.
Although seeing as DJ and producer are one and the same these days it may be a means to an end if the exposure gets them more bookings...
As an aside I met a guy last night who used to run a (relatively) successful hardcore night in Glasgow; you could have called him up and coming. He was handing out free passes to a titty bar. In the pissing rain.

That reminds me, last year I randomly started receiving promos from Nukleuz. I filled out the reaction sheets and sent them back, and never received another promo again!![]()
yeah, like it's so funny - I'm laughing out loud
Constructive criticism then??

They got off lightly if Nucleuz did that to me they would get the record sent back after a week in the cats litter tray. I'd probably smear some of my own excrement on there too for good measure.

Yeah, but that's what - 2-3 people/night? Nothing compared to what a podcast or demo mix would achieve.

Re: Want To Receive Promos Early? Join The NEC's Paid Promo List
I don't see the problem here. These people would normally have to pay for tracks when they came out officially anyway, so the only difference is that they get them early. Its not ripping anybody off unless its going to cost more than usual, and if someone plays a lot of NEC tracks then this will be of benefit to them. Considering how much hardcore mp3 actually sells it doesn't seem unreasonable to charge for them and "Promo" vinyl still costs money and i don't see anyone raging about that. You cant fucking say anyones being ripped off when it clearly states exactly what is being offered theres nothing misleading here, and it pisses me off to claim that a small record label that has been going for ages is trying to do that.. i'm not even particularly a fan of the label but they are clearly not bad guys.
And why are people bringing yet another 'uk hardcore is bad' discussion into a thread, jesus christ its boring now. why the fuck do we care what mr 'i've not bought a hardcore record since 97' thinks about anything, its irrelevent

Yes, the label's money. Unless you're talking about promos in shops which pretty much by definition aren't really promos at all, as discussed above.

Because the very fact I get involved is partly because I would like to buy records again but don't have the opportunity to buy tunes I like on a format I like? Because there's so many bummers arselicking 'big' names to get their shitty promos early they don't criticise when they should for fear of being struck off the 'up and coming' list. Like 99.9% are ever going to get there.
UK hardcore fans are so boring- absolutely fuck all to say apart from "I like it- if you don't then fuck off". Have you got an HTID tattoo?

The reason true "promos" always say "not for sale" is because they are supposed to be given away to dj's and in recording contracts it usually states the artist will not receive royalties on promotional copies, only full release sold copies.
Not sure how that works with all these hardcore labels who sell promos, i think thats more of a sales pitch for bedroom dj's than a way to con artists out of money.

2/3 people a night + additional people hearing them on mixes/podcasts = lots of potential sales.

Re: Want To Receive Promos Early? Join The NEC's Paid Promo List
Bored on Monday, so catching up on USH is good fun.......
Why is everyone getting bent out of shape about this? I have asked all of the producers I want to hear material from if I can have access to the "to be released" stuff and I'll gladly pay for it. No brainer for me - Wait ages for a release (and on Vinyl) - cost £6, get it now digitally - cost £1.50-2.00. Simples!
As for promos, personally its a pile of horseshit anyway. I used to get loads from Alpha back in the day and would only use about 30-40% of the tracks. You get asked for feedback and then have the dilemna "If I tell the truth, will they stop my freebies" so you keep shut and apologise profusely when someone prods you every once in a while. I'd rather have the freedom of choice and pay for what I believe is good - as opposed to feeling obliged to playing something
What the new world has done is shift the power and in my opinion, there actually isnt a need for "promos". Most people are going to digital so why not just release tracks when finished? As has already been said, promos were a way to test the reaction of tracks; fine for a huge music scene, was maybe OK for hardcore back in the day, but for today? Surely you can get feedback immediately with the power of tinternet? If music is so fast moving, maybe a track is out of date after the weekend. Fuck - I bet this post is archived before anyone reads it. Maybe we should include the pdf file of the reaction sheet with the music file - then ask for it to be faxxed back, like in the olden days.......
....oh, hang on.....I can hear the hooves of the approaching army of "Vinyl is for real DJs"
(not horses hooves, their hooves btw
)

One great new way to distribute promos now is using custom printed USB drives like the ones in this article. All your music can be preloaded onto the drive so it gives instant access to others. Also makes for a handy tool after since it can be used just like a normal flash drive.

Why? Do you DJ? In public? With hoardes of screaming fans? Pre pubescent teens waving placards proclaiming their undying love for you from a public viewing balcony at JFK airport. Night after night of opening the Ed Sullivan show. Dougal AND Gammer on your MSN list. Wow.
You 2 are so subtle about it, we just wouldnt know.

He was trying to prove his point that playing out can be good promotion. What's your problem? Its a valid point, I just don't think one or two people a gig is as effective as a podcast or demo.

My point is that you 2 are particularly bad at "I play out to massive crowdz yeah, like it's so funny - I'm laughing out loud" type comments. We all know that your playing to 15 people, 6 of who are next up on the 1's and 2's, 2 are promoters, 4 bar staff and Alkivar with his intrusive camera.

Considering Saiyan has played at Candyland (parties that get thousands of people) and I've played at Candyball, etc that's a pretty stupid assumption

Both of those event series are in the States.
Kandieland is in Phoenix, Arizona.
Candyball is in New York City.
And yes, both have MCs. Casper from your side of the pond is a Candyball resident.
