United States of Hardcore

Revolution 10th-Dec-1999

Here was another relatively new event for our scene so naturally I wanted to go along and see what it was all about. Unlike recent raves that I've been to there were no other USH NET ravers going with me, just me and my friend Rich. We got to the venue at 10:00 and after quite a strict search by security we were in for 10:20. Now the flyer had promised 10 guest DJ's without revealing who, although when we saw the line up it was just Brisk and Sharkey plus residents. This didn't matter though because it's tunes played not DJ's that make the night good. The venue was called The Underground and it was just that. Upstairs was a small bar room with DJ's playing techno and then the main room was downstairs. This was split into two sections with seats at the back. It was a great rave venue with a friendly atmosphere. The first DJ was Top Groove and he played a trancey set which was quite good. Next up was the promoter Paul-O who also played quite a trancey set, dropping in the remix of "The Launch" by DJ Jean and a few other familiar tunes. We then went up to the smaller room upstairs where Sharkey was playing his first set. I've never really got into Sharkey's style before but he was banging all night. He played hard trance tunes and really got the place going. Sharkey has quite a big following and I can see why now. It was then back downstairs to see Spinner playing the next set, which was quite good. After him at 2:00 was Sharkey again, doing his second set of the night. He did another banging set and played half an hour extra as Brisk was late. Brisk followed and did a great, fast and hard set as we've come to expect from him. However as he was late he played slightly shorter than planned, finishing at 4:15. The next DJ was USH NET's very own DJ Majestik. It was great to see one of the site regulars playing at an event like this and he did a good trancey set. Finally came DJ Max who played the only real happy hardcore set of the night, and it was one of my favourites. Summing up the night, this was a pretty good event at an underground venue where the crowd were all friendly and more than willing to chat with you. The only thing that I can really fault it on is the music style. It seemed that there was too much trance core being played and not enough vocally happy hardcore. With the exceptions of DJ's Max, Brisk and Sharkey (who was brilliant) I thought the other DJ's sets were quite similar. The music was still good though and this is only a minor gripe on an otherwise impressive night. I know Sheffield is quite a long way from London but this is a good event and is definitely worth travelling up for.

There is another new event on next week which is Sensation at The Emporium in Coalville. It is seriously worth considering and I know I'll be there. Only a few shout outs this time and they go to Rich, Majestik, Paul-O and Brisk. See you all later.
