United States of Hardcore

Revolution 5th-May-2000

This was my fifth time at Revolution and before easter I was beginning to consider it as my local rave. However due to other nights on I had to miss the last two and hadn't been for six weeks. Therefore I was especially looking forward to getting back to this one. I managed to convince one of my uni mates to come up as well as bringing up two lads from Telford.

We got to the venue at about 9:45 and we were in for just after 10:30. The queue at Area 51 never really seems to move that fast which can be a bit frustrating really. After a lenient search by decent security (unlike the moody Bagleys gorillas) we made our way into the venue. As I walked in I saw that the venue didn't look that full at all. Thankfully it filled up later on but was still slightly emptier than it usually is. The first set was Defy. Now I have to admit that I have never even heard of him before I went here but I was quite impressed with the set he did. He played a few Evolution tunes, Take me up, Virtual Dreams, Oblivion and he could scratch as well. I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for his name in the future.

Next up was Simz who was filling in for the absent CJ Glover and he played a hard trance set. The lads I went with didn't like this at all saying it was "too slow and trancey", but I enjoyed it. It was similar to an M-Zone set and I thought that it was good to have something different to break the night up with.

Third set was one of the residents Topgroove. He played a good trancecore set, dropping in "1999 remix" by Hixxy. After him came the promoter and resident Paul-O. The tempo sped back up when he came on and he played a good banging hardcore set. My favourite single moment of the night was when I was on the podium next to the decks and he dropped in the mighty "Distornord". Now that really was wicked. The next Revolution is Paul-O's farewell night and I'm gutted that I won't be able to make it. I think that he will be missed a lot. Revolution has come from his hard work, but it's being taken over by one of the MC's, Beatz, so I'm sure he understands the Revolution vibe and can carry on running it in the same way. I think Paul-O will be missed more as a resident. He always plays banging hardcore and a lot of people there really rate him as a DJ.

The person taking over from Paul-O as resident after he leaves is Spinner and he was on next. He played a really banging hardcore set and threw in a few absolutely mental tunes. There were many good sets on the night but I think Spinner just edged it as set of the night. For the final set of the night it was Energy and I was really pleased to see him there as he's one of my favourite DJ's at the moment. He played it a little bit slower than he usually would but sped it up at the end, finishing off with "Pilgrim" and "Take me up". Unfortunately the power was turned off halfway through his last tune but it was gone 4:00 then anyway so no-one really seemed to mind.

The sound system was a bit too quiet at points but apart from that I can't fault the night at all. The crowd as usual were all friendly and the club is a nice rave venue with plenty of room to dance or chill out. This was another really good night from Revolution and they are well on their way to establishing themselves as a great hardcore night. However I think it's a shame that they don't get as much recognition as they should do. Down south they are virtually unheard of and at the moment I think Revolution is the best kept secret in raveland. Small hardcore clubs are important to the scene and I would say this is the best one of it's kind in the country. Try your upmost to get here soon as you really won't be disappointed.

Shouts go out to Rich, Majestik, Danny and Gaz, Spinner, Paul-O and Energy. I'll see you all at Elation. :)
