United States of Hardcore
After going to Elation the night before, I really should have had a night in and got my strength back. However with this Revolution event on that was not an option. I've been going to Revolution pretty regularly since it moved to Area 51 and I knew this night would be something special. It was the farewell night of Paul-O the promoter and resident DJ, someone who is respected by everyone there. We got to the club early so we were near the front of the queue and we were inside for 10:20. The search by security was non-existent this time and I think that led to the queue moving faster. I checked the line up as soon as I got inside to find out that Brisk wasn't playing any more. This was a bit disappointing as he was someone that I wanted to see, but he was apparently overseas so that couldn't be helped. The rest of the line up was all good anyway. The club was fuller than I had seen it before so this had all the makings of a good night. The first set was Topgroove and he played a good bouncy hardcore set. Next up was CJ Glover who played an unusual set for Revolution. He mainly played some older breakbeat tunes but he also dropped in "Hold me Now" and "Devotion", which are favourites of mine but I wouldn't really associate them with Revolution. At midnight came Clarkee who played a mental techno set. I've never really been keen on techno in the past but this set was crazy. Clarkee played it really fast and everyone was going mad. After him came Paul-O to play his last ever set. He played a fast and bouncy hardcore set with a few techno tunes thrown in, and showed why he'll be missed as a resident DJ. The person I really wanted to see on the night was Sharkey and he arrived towards the end of Paul-O's set. As soon as he came in he went straight to the mike and started MC'ing, before doing anything else. Everyone realised that Sharkey had arrived and the atmosphere inside increased. After Paul-O came his old Uprising partner Kenny Sharp and he played an older trance set. This was slower than a lot of the other sets so it was a chance to chill out for a bit. Sharkey came next at 3:00 and played what was undoubtedly the set of the night. It was a really banging freeform set, the peak of which was "Now Control". I hope that events like this will persuade Sharkey to reconsider quitting hardcore, as he's a popular and talented DJ, and exactly the sort of character that we need in the scene. At 4:00 came Alchemist who played a similar set to CJ Glover. His set was also a step away from the Revolution style, dropping in "Shooting Star" and the Q-Dup remix of "Discoland". At around 4:30 a few Crasher kids walked in to the amazement of everyone. The lights came on at just before 5:00 and then it suddenly dawned on everyone that the night was finishing at 5:00 and not 6:00. A chat with one of the Crasher kids revealed that they had arrived for a hard house night which started straight afterwards. Even though the event was advertised to finish at 6:00 it actually finished at 5:00. M-Zone turned up expecting to play at 5:00 but he was not able to. My mate was annoyed that it had finished an hour early but after 2 raves in 2 days I was just happy to be able to get back to bed. As we left I got a strange feeling of inferiority compared to the crasher kids outside. At 5:00 they were all raring to go, and also queueing for Insomniacz across the road, whereas we were off home. However it had been a long weekend and all my energy had gone. Next time we'll go to Insomniacz afterwards and show them all how it's done, because no-one outlasts ravers. Overall this was the best Revolution that I've been to yet. It was a real shame to see Paul-O go, especially after all the work he's put into setting Revolution up. While he's not really known down south he's virtually a legend in Yorkshire. Although he's given up promoting Revolution I think he'll struggle to stay away altogether, so I'm sure we'll see his face there in the future. The night is now being run by his younger brother MC Beatz so hopefully he can continue it in the same way. Revolution has got the reputation and the dedicated following so I can't see why not. I think Revolution is the best smaller hardcore club night in the country and I really like it here. I know it's a long way from London but if you don't come and see what it's all about then you're missing an entire part of the hardcore scene. Keep an eye out for Destiny on June 10th, another new rave night for the Yorkshire hardcore scene. I'll see you all there. Shouts go out to Rich, Majestik, Spinner and Sharkey.
