United States of Hardcore

Helter Skelter 31st-Oct-1998

What a crazy night. This was my fifth skelter and it was without doubt the best of the lot. The whole night was just perfection. The weather was bad as we queued up but we only had to queue for an hour which was surprisingly short. We went into the chill out tent first and they were playing house in there, which was quite good. We stayed in there till the sanctuary opened at about 8:45. The first set was Vinyl Trixta and when the first song he played was "Wonderful World" I could tell it was going to be a blinding night. He played a decent first set. Next up was Billy Bunter. I'm not really a big fan of his so I didn't really enjoy his set that much, even though Storm was MCing. After that came Vinyl Groover. He played a reasonable set but I've heard him do better. It was about this time that I had a very weird experience. I went into the sanctuary toilets and saw somebody who I recognised. I then realised that it was the lad from the Mcdonalds advert who was trying to get Alan Shearer's autograph. Yes that's right you heard me first time. I spoke to him for a bit and he said this was the first big event he'd been to.

Next up was Brisk and he played a top quality hardcore techno set. The rollers was then jam packed for Slipmatt who also played a top quality set. Next up was Seduction who did a good set and then came Force and Styles. I skipped this one because I personally don't like Force and Styles. Dougal was next and he played to his usual high standards. After that came the Rat Pack. I saw some of this set but I'm not that keen on old skool so I left halfway through. During the set I saw Storm in the crowd so I had to say hello to him.I saw about half of Mark EG and M zone and they seemed okay.

Even before the event it was obvious that the best two sets were going to be the last two. Last but one was Sy and Storm. These two are becoming a very impressive duo. The crowd were really hyped for this set and Scratchmaster Sy didn't disappoint. He played another brilliant set with all top quality tunes. The best was to come last though with Vibes and Live Lee. These two are gods, there's no other way to describe them. They played an absolutely incredible set and all the crowd were going crazy. Live Lee said over the mike that this was the best hardcore event he had seen for ages and he was right. At the end I went and spoke to Live Lee and he was really friendly. He is a genuinely nice bloke and he seemed to have time to speak to everyone.

Finally I just wanna say respect to the HSO for yet another brilliant event. They deserve it. I'll see you all on new year's eve.
