Revolution 16th-Feb-2001

This was the fourth Revolution event held at The Adelphi in Sheffield, since they moved from Area 51 last year. The Adelphi is of course where the legendary Uprising was held, and so it is a club with a lot of history.

Revolution starts at 8pm, but I couldn't make it there until about 10:30 due to having to work till 8. The only thing that I can fault The Adelphi on is it's location, as it is not in Sheffield city centre. If you do ever decide to come up to Revolution then it would be best to find out the way there first. More importantly, pre-book a taxi for afterwards as it is hard to get one otherwise.

I walked into the club to hear one of the residents CJ Glover on the decks. He played a good varied set including "Take me up" and a few old skool tunes, and was assisted by Sharkey on the mike. CJ Glover really can scratch and was impressed by that. :) Next up was Spinner whose set mainly consisted of bouncy Spanish hardcore. There have been a few complaints recently that Revolution has been too hard house orientated, but this event was definitely more hardcore orientated. I personally don't mind either style, but then that's just my opinion. Spinner's set was very bouncy and the crowd definitely seemed to like it.

At midnight came Steve Reed, a house DJ. He played a good hard house set with some good tunes in, and added a bit more variety to the night. After him came the main event of the night which was the Nu Energy PA. I've watched some PA's before and wondered if they actually were live, but I'm certain that this one was. Energy and Sharkey were playing the riffs live on two keyboards, with K-Complex next to them putting it all together on a PC. I think they played about five tunes altogether, although the only one I'd heard before was "Renegades". That means that four new banging freeform tunes are forthcoming on Nu Energy, who are working hard to give us more than our fair share of quality new releases.

The live PA went on for half an hour, then the last hour and a half was Sharkey and Energy back to back. This was billed as a "history of freeform" set, and throughout the whole set they rolled out one wicked tune after another. They started off with older tunes such as "See the stars" and "Back to the top", then included freeform anthems like "Lemonade Raygun", "Powerjam" and "Desensitize". For me it was definitely the set of the night, and I was still dancing when 3:00 came.

Revolution is gradually improving since it moved to The Adelphi and altered it's music policy slightly, and the extra hour definitely made a difference. It is one of the best hardcore nights in the north, and is definitely worth a visit. It has a slightly different vibe to southern events such as Raindance and Future Dance, but is equally good. Revolution seems to be going fortnightly again, and they have booked Hixxy on March 2nd, then Devastate and Canada's Anabolic Frolic on March 16th. Hopefully I'll see you all there, but first is the small matter of Raindance this coming weekend. It could be their last event at The Drome, so make sure that you don't miss it.

Shouts go out to Lee UHF, Scott, Steph, Martin Spaced, Mik Moss, Scott Majestik, Spinner, Sharkey, Energy and MC Ethos.
