The Concept Club, Newcastle under Lyme 10th-Mar-2001

This was my second visit to The Concept Club, and their second night. Its on the second Saturday of every month and focuses on old skool. Sorry dave, but I'm going to slag off your night ! To be fair to the promoter, the DJ line ups are good, especially for a small club, 400 capacity. They play wicked choons and both nights they have got the place rockin'. Dave is a great bloke, he is happy to chat and always replies to my e-mails.

The trouble is it's a weird club, firstly it's very cluttered, the dance floor is small with stupid supports sticking up everywhere, ok, I realise the roof would fall in if they weren't there but they really are annoying. It takes an age to fill up and even longer for the crowd to get into the mood. The first two hours are a waste of time, no one dances and its cold and moody. It gets full at about eleven, and you know what's coming next...... too many beer monsters in there. People were constantly bumping into you and no one had the decency to apologise, one bitch even snatched my horn off me and tried to snap it in two !!! I hadn't even blown the damn thing !!! Too many piss heads and far too moody for my liking. The sound system is shite too, depending on where you stand, but generally the treble is way too high and rips your ears to bits, oh and the ceiling is too low and the lights cook you !!! and the cloakroom lost my coat, for a bit !!!

Anyway by about 11.30 the place was rockin', Pilgrim had played an awesome set and managed to get the Ravers in the club dancing, while the others stood around looking grumpy and drinking lager, and it's that crowd that really fucks it up. There were some true ravers in there for sure, but we were out numbered. On came tango and he too played a good set, I was dying to see Slipmat, but I couldn't stay any longer and we headed home at about 1230. With a bit of luck the beer monsters will stop going, they obviously weren't enjoying it, and there are a couple of great nights coming up, namely Hardcore Heaven Tour and Old Skool heroes. I for one will miss the next few, and try it again later in the year. I hope this club gets better and succeeds. Respect to the promoters for getting great DJ's and respect to the real ravers in there. Big shout out to the guy with the yellow swirly hair for helping me get my horn back, and see you all at Slammin' ( if you can cope with Hardhouse DJ's) the day I get married !!!
