United States of Hardcore

Revolution 16th-Mar-2001

Revolution once again returned for another regular hardcore night at The Adelphi in Sheffield. The event is generally held about once every two or three weeks and is well established as a quality Yorkshire hardcore night. The night starts at 9pm and I got there at about 9:40. I went in without a search although they did search some of the other people around me. When I walked in the club seemed a bit empty and I was worried that it was going to be like that all night. First set of the night was Hooley, a resident at Dizstruxshon. He played a good hard house set that included "Fantastic Thing" and a tune with a wicked "You killed Kenny" sample in it. Next up was one of the residents DJ Topgroove, who is now also involved in the running of the night. He played a hard trance/hard house set with quality tunes like "Escape" and "Far Out" in it. At 11:00 came one of the main guests for the night, Next Generation's DJ Devastate. He played a really good hard and bouncy set with plenty of energy, and tended to steer clear of the vocal stuff. He finished off with "Ruff Muff" , and I was impressed by his set overall. By this point everyone had arrived and the overall attendance was probably slightly more than last time. The main attraction on this night was Anabolic Frolic who had come all the way over from Canada. He promotes Hullabaloo in Toronto which is supposed to be huge, and this was billed as his first ever time playing in England. I had never heard of him before but I had heard from a lot of people that he was quite "cheesy" so I was a little wary beforehand. His set was full of happy vocal tunes but he didn't include anything that could be classed as blatant cheese. He dropped in tunes like "Cloudy Daze remix", the Terminator theme tune remix, "Return to Elyssium", "Power of love" and a new Raverbaby tune. At 1:00 came CJ Glover, another Revolution resident. He's very good technically and he can scratch very well. His set included tunes like "Waves of Desire", "Take me up", "Lost Generation" and a "Sweet harmony" remix. CJ Glover is a good DJ but the only thing I can fault him on is that his sets tend to be quite similar. At the last four or five Revolutions I have seen him play his sets have all included pretty much the same tunes. That's not to say they're not all good tunes, but it would be good to hear him throw in a few different ones as well. :) Last set of the night was the third Revolution resident DJ Sharkey. He is my favourite hardcore DJ and so I always look forward to hearing his sets here. On the night he played lots of forthcoming tunes including the wicked "Evil Returns" by Energy. He also played some older freeform tunes like "Unda Ground", "Mindless Pleasure" and "The Awakening", and for me just beat Devastate for the set of the night. Regular hardcore nights are never on the same scale as bi-monthly events like Future Dance or Slammin Vinyl, but they always have quality resident DJ's. Revolution is exactly like this, and has a really up for it crowd. Everyone there knows each other so you never get any stupid attitude or trouble. They always get good guest DJ's in and play good quality respectable and hard music. If you've never been before then it's definitely worth a visit. Revolution's next event is on April 6th and welcomes M-Zone and crowd favourite Paul-O for a techno set. The real one to look forward to though is May 4th when they join forces with Future Dance who host their second club tour night. I'll see you all there. Shouts go out to Lee UHF, Steph, Martin Spaced, Scott, Rich B, Scott "Surprisingly sober" Majestik, Mik Moss, Sharkey, and most of all to the amazing blond girl with the sun tan and black bra top who I literally couldn't take my eyes off all night. :)
