Uprising 20th-Apr-2001

Uprising is a legendary hardcore night in Sheffield that began around 1996. It was described in 1996 as being the best weekly hardcore night in the country, and five years later it is still extremely well remembered in Yorkshire.

The two promoters behind Uprising ended the night in 1999, with one of them (Paul-O) going on to start Revolution in the same year. Paul-O puts on about three Uprising re-union nights a year though, this being one of those nights.

When I got to the Adelphi it was just before the 9:00 opening time and there was a decent queue outside. This gave an indication of how busy the night was to be, as I have never seen a queue for Revolution at the same venue.

I got inside at just after 9:00 to see Alchemist playing a nice bouncy hardcore set. He played a set which tended to steer clear of most of the old anthems, finishing off with his own "Keep on trying". After Alchemist came Revolution resident CJ Glover. He's a big old skool fan and played tunes such as "Vampire" and the classic "Hold me now". It's always great to hear tunes like that played at the Adelphi, as to the Yorkshire crowd they are much more of a rarity than down south. At 11:00 came the promoter Paul-O to a warm welcome. His was undoubtedly the hardest set of the night, starting off with some dark and scary techno. He finished off with some breakbeat style tunes, to give a good varied set. Next up on the decks was Exel. Up north there has never been as much emphasis on happy vocal style tunes as there was down south, with the Yorkshire crowd preferring a harder selection. Exel did play a vocal selection but his was the only real one of the night, so it went down well. He played some vocal classics such as "Shooting Star", "Discoland", "Together Forever" and "Wonderland".

Last but one on the decks was the Compulsion promoter DJ Demand. He played a good set that wasn't too predictable, and kept the crowd going all the way through. The last set of the night was Revolution resident DJ Topgroove. He's always been a big hard trance fan and this night was no different. His set was a bit slower than the other sets, but he played some well known Uprising tunes to keep the crowd dancing right until the end.

Overall there wasn't one individual set that stood out as the set of the night, but I was impressed by the variety on the night. Paul-O played techno, Exel played all the vocal anthems and Topgroove played hard trance. The tune selection wasn't predictable, ie the same tunes didn't get caned all night. The club was rammed all night, and I have never been to a Revolution event that had anywhere near that many people there. Speaking to old Uprising regulars I was told that it was just as busy as it used to be five years ago. I think that shows the quality of the night, in that it can get the same amount of people in five years later. It would be nice if more of the people came along to Revolution as well though.

The next event at the Adelphi is the second Future Dance club tour on May 4th. Future Dance are bringing up Energy and Kaos, Revolution are bring their resident DJ's, and just for good measure they've thrown in Scott Brown as well. Not only that but DJ Uraken is being flown all the way over from Japan to play on the night. I've never been to a mediocre Future Dance event so this will definitely be worth a visit. See you all there. :)

Shouts go out to Lee UHF, Martin Spaced, Mik Moss, Scott Majestik, Rich B, Lang-E, Part-E, Jubei, Riddler and Kleiny.

A thought... I had to give up jogging for my health. My thighs kept rubbing together and setting my pantyhose on fire.
