Helter Skelter Vs Compulsion 26th-May-2001

Right cos no one has done a skelter review for Saturday it seems that me and Denno are going to have to do one, its our first attempt at a review so don’t blame us if its crap!

Firstly the day started off badly, one of our group (Lauren) missed the meet-up at our local station, unfortunately we had to leave without her, otherwise we would have missed our connecting train to Manchester.

Once we got to Manchester (Piccadilly) we went to Victoria station to meet SD & skillboy, but they went to Piccadilly to meet us. Doh!

Eventually we got to Bowlers to find a small ish Q at about 7.30. whilst in the Q Dave amused EVERY1 by pointing out 3 lads who got dropped of by their mummy right outside the venue looking like right muppets! Once the doors opened the Q moved quickly and we were in at about 8.25. The search was thorough but fast, and the security were some of the best I have ever met (although they confiscated my key ring (Denno) coz it was an offensive weapon!

This was our first time in Bowlers 4 every1, and we were all amazed at the sheer size of the place! The crowd in the main room was fairly small at this point, so we took the opportunity to have a quick walk around. All the room were large, with excellent décor and sound systems. The fun fair was actually free which is a nice change from some of the more recent events which have advertised free funfairs or rides that you actually have to pay for. Err the toilets were functional, and the cafe part with hot food was a nice touch.

Our first set was Robbie long & devastate we stayed in the room 4 about 15mins, although the sound system at this point seemed to be very bassy, so we left to hear slipmat in the history of dance, wot a wicked anthems set! It was predominantly a 94 style set, with tune such as out of space, and possibly captain of the ship, and others that we don’t know the names of!

At this point me (Denno) and Danny left to write some shout out’s out! In the marquee outside where we bumped into Rich from Sheffield and his mate, we then left about 50 pages of paper on the table (literally) and returned to main room 2 see the last few mins of (we think) sarge’s set.

After sarge came (we think) mark eg & m-zone, at this point I kidnapped Dave to go outside coz I needed to be sick (migraine) Out side I Dave and I saw a girl collapse and unbelievably her mate, just sat there with her unconscious on his lap! It was only when one of the Birkenhead lot (more about these later) intervened that security where alerted and the girl was rushed to an ambulance! I was sick a bit more then felt better so went back in.

When I got back in I just caught the last few tunes of Mark eg & m-zone, well I was impressed along with Dave to these tunes, they where of all different genres (we thought) and different speeds so we presume that the whole set was a very varied set! it was a nice new idea anyway.

Next on where Force and Styles, at this point me and Dave escaped as quick as possible, coz their first tune was Pretty Green eyes! Now me and Dave where well chuffed to have left then, because we met a couple of birds at the bar whom we had been in the Q with. One of them asked us if we wanted to see her party trick, obviously we said yes, what came next took us both by surprise. She pulled up her top and flopped her tits out!!!!! Not only that but she made me and Dave poke them!!!!! (we need more girls like this at raves IMO)

We all then ventured outside to the fun fair, Danny went onto the hearts & diamonds ride, and managed to let go of his glow stick’s mid ride, one of witch landed on mine and Dave’s table, knocking Dave out of his seat! As the dare devils got off from the ride Danny who had been very successfully chatting up a 22 year old (after stealing her from Dave) decided to tell the bird he was 16! LOL we didn’t see her again!

Hear we lost Danny for a bit ( he was trying to chase his new found love!) but when he returned he did bringing gifts – in the form of a bedroom raver!

Me and Dave then proceeded back inside to boogie! But Danny and CO stayed outside talking to Scott Brow (Danny assures me he’s very nice even though his accent is hard to decipher.) At this point Dave let me know he wanted to go into the technodrome (this is unheard of for Dave as he is normally old skool only) this room was horrendously hot but the sound and lighting (especially the strobes) were wicked. After dancing to Scorpio for about 20 mins Dave decided he needed a kip! That was Dave’s last words before he fell asleep until 4.55am at the back of the main room!

Meanwhile Danny and Blackie found SD and Skill boy then went in search of the elusive Banksy. On their search they witnessed a raver get battered big time by security outside the chillout tent. Then we all proceeded to the main room and Sharkey & Energy, this was an amazing set at their usual high standards, and it was nice to see Sharkey on the mic again! Along side the one like the AliG who made a guest appearance on the stage with Wizzkid & Charlie B, although nobody actually know what he said, we can all be agreed on the fact that he said "booyakasha" at some point.

Towards the end of this set me, Danny and SD went outside where we met Crisemanic and DJ Uplift, we sat outside speaking with crissE for ages as she threw random stones at parked cars and vans in the car park (with a 90% hit rate!!!) …. Not bad for a bird!, we then returned just before the beginning of Scott Browns set.

And what a set it was! Starting off with new evolution tunage, then progressing into Dutch new style gabber! This was for us, the set of the night without a doubt. I even managed to get a shout out to me and my bird, who couldn’t make it to the event, only to be finished the day after (that’s gratitude 4 ya)!!

Then came SY’s set, but at the beginning unfortunately a raver collapsed, the music was off for about 5 – 10 mins as security and paramedics tried to sort the guy out (who unfortunately died in hospital later on). Sy played his usual set but with generally less cheesy tunes.

Over all this was an amazing event (defiantly the best rave I have ever witnessed). An finally I come to the matter of the Birkenhead, what can I say, they where friendly, helpful, happy ravers (in masses) what a change by them, I didn’t hear of any trouble relating to them. Nice one Birkenhead keep it up!

Denno and Danny hold no responsibility 4 any f**k ups in the set timeage within this review, incorrect naming of tunes or dj’s or ppl we met etc coz we never had watches on and we R just f**k ups anyway.

Shout to: me (Denno), Danny, Blackie, Dave (Mr sleepy). Potfish, Andy M, SD, Skill Boy, Chrissemanic, Uplift, Rich (from Sheffield), Banksy, Bedroom raver, Anton & your bloke (I think that’s your name if you’re the one I kept bumping into all night) PLURaver (who the spell checker seems to think u should be called pullover!) and any1 we failed to remember.

C ya all at the next one!
