United States of Hardcore
This was the second time Future Dance had held their club event at the Colloseum and this was also their Christmas bash, which rounds off a successful year for them. Due to prior engagements, I didn’t arrive at the venue until about 12.30...tut tut !, but it was nice to walk straight into a venue without having to queue. I didn’t get searched by security and just walked straight in. Security on the night seemed alright to me, there were lots of them scattered around at the club, but they didn’t seem too overbearing. Up the stairs, through the doors and into the madness of the main room, which was looking pretty well done up. There were dance platforms towards the side and back, with drapings and backdrops scattered about the place. The lighting was good, sound system was loud, but it did sound a bit distorted at times. Sy was on the decks ripping up the dancefloor and for me, he has definitely improved over the last 6 months or so. He seems to have put the same old anthems he used to cane to the back of his record box, and just focused more on upfront fresh stuff. Dropping tunes such as the new Quosh 38 and ‘Cold as Ice’ remix and with Storm on the mic busting out some new lyrics, the combination was irresistible. Sharkey followed on next and played another top draw hardcore set. 21st century hardcore at its finest from the Sharkster, playing lots of brand spanking new freeform tunes which all sounded refreshing. The future’s bright, if Sharkey is still on the ball on the hardcore side of things. The turnout on the night, I thought would have been better especially after the success off their last Bagleys event. The venue I would say was only about half full. It seemed a lot of ravers were saving up their coppers for their Christmas shopping !! But the atmosphere was excellent as it always is at FD. No attitude, just happy smiley ravers everywhere, its all good :) Just past 2.00 and Fade was in charge off the Technics in the main room. Playing lots of new Next Generation / Blatent Beats tuneage, which seemed to go down well with the crowd. Whizzkid was on the mic, laying down some top rhymes and getting everyone hyped up. Mr Future Dance, Kaos followed on next and took things a bit more banging. A relentless assault of hardcore, showcasing tunes from the new Future Dance record label. I decided to take a stroll into the old skool room next door as Robbie Long + Devastate were on the decks playing some top classics. Admittedly it wasn’t too busy in there, but those people who were dancing, were loving the old tunes being laid out. The Colloseum as a venue, seems like a good choice to me. Lots of spaces to sit and chill, good facilities and how good is it to come out of a rave with sparkling clean trainers !! Back over in the main room and just past 4.00, Energy was banging out a top draw selection of freeform. Definitely my set of the night, Energy was on top form, dropping newer freeform tunes such as ‘Rez out’, alongside older classics such as ‘In deep trouble’. As the last hour dawned, the dancefloor was still pretty having it eventhough quite a few people had decided to leave early. Impact closed proceedings in the main room, playing a very vocal selection with tunes such as ‘Castles in the Sky’. The set was a bit too cheesy for my liking, but it seemed to go down well with the crowd. Overall it was a wicked night and I enjoyed it. I was expecting the turnout to be slightly better though and it did seem the magic spark seemed to be missing on the night. But I’m glad I went, its been a top year for Future Dance and I’ve loved all their events. The best of the luck to them for their monthly events which start at the Colloseum from February onwards, get down and support them !!
