United States of Hardcore
Bedlam returned to the George IV once again for their third event of 2002. Since they first arrived at this venue the promoter has managed to extend the opening hours till 1am to give the ravers some extra dancing time. The night itself began at 7pm but due to work I didn't make it until about 8:45. As I walked up to the venue and up the stairs I could hear the bass booming and I started to smile. This was because a new louder sound system had been obtained for this event, so the music was nice and loud all through the night. As I came in Martin Space was just starting his set. At the last Bedlam I went to he played a really good freeform set but this time he had chosen to play a happier set. He played a selection of fairly recent hardcore tunes like "Oblivion" and "Rave on" which was uplifting all the way through. I've also seen him play a hard house set so I'm quite impressed by his versatility. After him came promoter UHF, using his trademark CDJ deck as well as the standard two. He started off with "Addicted to Bass" by Puretone to amazed smiles from the crowd. The rest of the set was pretty much brand new and mainly freeform. He played "How U like bass" pitched up and the forthcoming "Identify the beat" by Marc Smith on Bonkers. The main guests on the night came from Elation as part of their record launch tour. HB and Ponder travelled up with MC Elmo and they were on for an hour and a half altogether. The set they played was also mostly new stuff and I hadn't heard the majority of it before. The first half of their set was mostly NRG/hard trance style tunes, some of it with quite dark breakdowns. They also played "Identify the beat" and the second half of their set contained a lot of breakbeat style tunes. Final set of the night was Majestik and he played a whole set of old skool hardcore. This contained lots of well known big tunes and he finished off with the classic "Now is the time". The majority of the ravers there stayed till the end. The Bedlam philosophy is all about nu talent and that's exactly what they have at every one of their events. They don't go for very many big name DJs, but the regular local DJs they booked are all talented and show a lot of potential. They also have their own regular group of up and coming MCs who are well liked by the local Yorkshire ravers. On this night I enjoyed UHF's set but I thought the Elation boys just edged him for the set of the night. Keep an eye out for the next Bedlam if you are a Yorkshire local as it's a decent night with a good crowd of dedicated ravers. Shouts go out to Lee UHF, Martin Space, Jake Nicholls, Lang-E, Part-E, HB, Ponder, Tom u4ea, Elmo, Scott Majestik, Lynsey, Steph, Impulse, Trigg, J.O, Runna, a very pissed MC Shame, C5, Hirsti, M.O.D. and Shaun. :)
