United States of Hardcore

Ultimate Rush - Boxing Club, Reading 19th-Apr-2002

Well what can i say, Hardcore in my home town of reading, i just had to go. I rushed home from work and got ready and was at the bus stop by 8:20 as i was expecting the bus..... but i must of missed it as the bus came at 9 when the night was starting, ARSE!

Anyway, i finally arrived up town and jumped into a 'corner' shop to buy my bottle of water, then proceeded to run around Reading to find the place. After alot of running in the wrong direction i finally met up with podja and i was in.

There were two security blokes on the door, but there was no search. Some may think this is a good thing but personally i dont. I think it jepordises the safety of everyone in there, just a quick pat down wouldn't do any harm just to keep on the safe side.

The venue was called The boxing club because it actually is Reading's boxing club, with the main hall being rented out to the ultimate rush crew. They had done well though, a nice drape covering the ceiling and glow in the dark displays on the wall covered up the hall well. The lighting was exellent, quite a few times i got lost in the lights so that was very pleasing. It was a great turn out, im sure they were happy with the attendance. Attitude wise, there was none while i was there. A real wide spectrum of people there, from happy ravers to what i would call 'Rude boys' but everyone was just having a wicked time to the hardcore. wicked.

On to the music!!! I was only there for 4 hours but i will say what i saw! First up when i arrived was Topside playing some really really banging hard trance. This was a really good set but not what i was there for so i waiting on the side for the hardcore. While i was waiting a good few people turned up, most notably a hyperactive Kev :)

After the trance was Readings own freeform guru, Acidnik. First track on was a bit of a teaser as it was pitched rite down, but all of a sudden BANG we have hardcore speed. I was strait onto the dancefloor for some stomping good and proper. Acidnik showed me how good freeform can be, especially playing the 'Hard Society Remix' Of product of society by Sharkey, with that real sweat breakdown. Also played was that wicked Breakbeaty track by Slam and Helix (forget the name) and this really was a top set. Acidnik going mad behind the dexx in a Mark EG style really helped to keep the crowd mental.

Next up was that nutter Mupster. Mupsters set was more towards the Banging side of UK hardcore and i enjoyed it alot aswell. During this set though i had to go and drop someone off at the station so i was to miss the rest which was a shame. When i got back i was expecting Vibes to be on but he hadn't turned up yet so instead it was Kryptonite taking over. I had been told this guy was cheesey, but it didn't matter as i was one of the only cheesey guys there, i was the only one with white gloves!! Anyway, this was a good set, with one of my favourates 'Feeling fine' being dropped, and when that vocal came in i couldn't help but throw my hands in the air and shout of the vocals, which in doing so i got pointed and laughed at by Mad man, hehehe :) This set got a bit to cheesey for me at one point tho, Shooting Star was really to much (although i was still singing and dancing hehhehe, party tune innit)

Unfortunatly thats all the music i heard as i had to escort someone else home, plus i had work the next day so i also wanted to go home.

The mcing was very good. Danger and RizlaDizla kept got the crowd really hype with some top lyrics and freestyling, great hosts for the night. As for the other mcs, Sykee was good but the others wern't that impressive imo.

All in all a great night, and i cant wait for the next one.

Shouts to : Nemes1s and his mates, KEV!!, Madman, Moochi (long time no see!), Acidnik, Danger, RizlaDizla, Mupster, Podja, Paul, Cristie & Josie, Karen, and all the other friendly people i spoke to!!
