United States of Hardcore
Here was the second Total Noise Therapy event put on by the Higher States of Hard Dance team, coming about a month and a half after the first one. That event had free entry and attracted a lot of people for a first event, so it was hoped that this event would do just as well. I had to work and meet some mates, so I didn't arrive at The Adelphi until about 10:30pm (the night started at 9). There was no queue when I got there so I walked straight in for a search. I was given a thorough search by a security guard who was courteous enough, and I paid my £5 entry fee to get in. I dropped my coat off in the cloakroom and headed into the club. The first thing that I noticed as I went in was that it was unfortunately not as busy as the previous TNT event. There were still a reasonable amount of people considering it was only their second event though, so it wasn't too disheartening. The first set which I saw was co-promoter Part-E and he played an older happy set, including a few classic tunes like the Slipmatt remix of "You're mine". Next up was DFM records DJ Fracus, and I have to say that I was pretty impressed by his set. Most of it was newer stuff that I hadn't heard before, including some nice tunes, some with a breakbeat element and some which were quite uplifting. It's good to see that up and coming DJs who don't have the resources of the big names can still make good new tunes and play a new set. People who make the effort like this should be booked more at hardcore events. After Fracus came Sharkey, my favourite DJ. He played a wicked Sharkey style set, the first half of which was new stuff I'd not heard before. This was dark and with a rock hard kick to it, just as freeform should be. In the rest of his set he played "Identify the beat", "Creator's Game" and the brilliant new "Crazy Styles" remix which has got a wicked drum and bass section in the middle of it. This got my vote for set of the night, but then I am a big Sharkey fan. :) Next up on the decks was Raverbaby Hixxy. I'm not a fan of his new stuff at all, but I did really enjoy his set here. This was because the large majority of his set was classic 96-98 hardcore tunes, including some absolute anthems. He dropped in "Forever Young", "Together Forever", "Now is the Time" and "All Systems Go", which I went absolutely berserk to as I heard it coming in. The last two tunes he played were the new "Elyssium" remix and another new tune I didn't recognise. The final set of the night was Brisk and he played the best set I've heard him do in quite a while. He started off with some nu-style gabba, then played a couple of older banging tunes. He did play the rip of "Catch" by Kosheen which I really don't like at all, but apart from that it was a very good set. The event drew to a close at 3am but it wasn't the end of the night for me because I jumped into a taxi afterwards and went to another club to see the mighty Lab 4 play live. :) This was a good night overall, even though the attendance was down slightly. The vibe of the night was great, I saw a lot of good sets, and The Adelphi is as always a cool venue. TNT has a set of new MCs instead of the usual names, the best of these being Wotsee. He will make it big soon, and really understands when an MC should chat and when he should be quiet. The other MCs were good too, although it was a shame that J.O. wasn't there as he's my favourite out of the up and coming Yorkshire MCs. This leads me onto one minor criticism of the night though. Different MCs have different kinds of voices, with some naturally being louder than others. Here the mike got passed around a lot, and at times the MC was a bit too loud in relation to the music. It would have been good to have had the mike volume adjusted slightly to allow for the different MCs, either from the sound engineer's booth or by the mike volume on the DJ's mixer. Apart from that it was a very good night though. The next Total Noise Therapy event is back here at The Adelphi on Friday May 31st, with DJs Stu Allan, M Zone, Demand and Paul-O. I can't make that one as I have a uni exam at 9am the next morning, but come along because it will be a good night. :) Shouts go out to Rich B, Lang-E, Part-E, Sawyer, Thumpa, Tash, Martin Space, Banksy, Wotsee, Denno, Ashley Speight, Kenno, Icklemiss, Ravegirl, Trigg, Shame, Bombjack, Rich Impulse, Hirsti, Lindsey, Jonesy, C-5, Invader, Alarm, Dean, Davespice, Sean, Ch33ky Charliieee, Number 2301, Scott Potential for another cracking "imaginary" set, and Sharkey for dishing out anti-Liverpool abuse to me as I was wearing the shirt. :)
