United States of Hardcore

Liberation and Vibealite 12th-Dec-1998

I have to apologise at the start if this review is a bit sketchy but it's been six weeks since I went so my memories of the event have faded a little bit.

We went down on the train and got to Nottingham. When we got there the ticket said near to PC World so we got a taxi to PC World and then spent 45 minutes walking round trying to find the place. We asked directions off two people who were both completely wrong and then eventually we found someone who knew the way.

When we got there I found out that there weren't that many people there which was a bit disappointing. However everybody in the queue was friendly which was good. We weren't searched at all and there were no police there either.

I got inside to find there was no merchandise stall despise saying on the flyer that there would be. I then had to spend the whle night with no whistle or glow rods - bastard! The venue consisted of one large room with a stage at the front and some chairs and tables and a bar at the back. There was no outside bit like at Skelter or Slammin which was also disappointing.

The night was broken up into hardcore, techno and old skool sets. Early on they had an old woman called supergran behind the decks playing techno. She must have been at least 60 and while I don't think for a minute that she was actually mixing herself, it was still quite funny to watch.

Vinylgroover did quite a good set with a good selection of tunes. DJ Vibes came on a bit later but unfortunately there was no Live Lee. I was a disappointed buy this because I love Vibes and Live Lee. The only MC there who I had heard of was Whizzkid and the rest I had never seen before. Vibes was wearing a West Ham shirt. I managed to say hello to him a bit later on as he walked through the crowd.

I think it was in Vibes' set that they managed to convince Hixxy to do some MCing. He was quite good at it. Hixxy was on later and he played a reasonable set.

Last set of the night was Unknown. He played a good set with a lot of familiar tunes, which finished the night off well.

I have only mentioned the hardcore sets here although there were also techno and old skool sets as well.

The best thing about this event was the atmosphere. I went to the toilets quite a few times throughout the night and when I did they were always full of people talking to each other. However I was disappointed by the night overall. I knew before I went that it wasn't going to be a massive event but I expected it to be bigger than it was. Except for one or two Birkenhead I didn't see any faces I recognised all night. The line up could have done with a few more big names to make the night a bit better.

After this I am just going to stick to the big three hardcore events (Skelter, Slammin and Hardcore Heaven).
