XLR8 - The Fridge, Brixton 14th-Jul-2002

It's been about a year since I’ve ventured out to the Hard House side of the universal matrix, but having won a guestie coupled with those irresistible shamanism drum beats from the fridge calling me in their oh so seductive trance:-

"comepeter,comepeter,babababa-ba-ba-ba,comepeter,comepeter,babababa-ba-ba-ba,comepeter,comepeter,babababa-ba-ba-ba,comepeter,comepeter,babababa-ba-ba-ba"

I couldn’t possibly resist not participating in the celebrations of the night, could I?

We got to the queue and I suddenly remembered the craziness and extremity of hard house. Some of the outfits were just downright bizarre, I saw one bird coming in complete with a shopping trolley - i kid you not -

I got into the venue and if it wasn’t for my friends assuring me I hadn’t accidentally drunk 250ml of pure LSD previously I could have sworn I was at a Future Dance night. There were just mental people going crazy all over the shop, trainee psychiatrists would have had a field day herding everyone into padded vans and locking them away in a mental institution for the rest of their lives.

The organisers had clearly invested a seriously large amount of cash to truly transform the Fridge from it's regular psy-trance feel to a hard house one. There were all sorts of crazy messages and posters stuck all over the walls, people handing out free glowsticks on the door, free cd giveaways, free fruit served throughout the night.

And also - if you've been to the Fridge before you know what a phat sound system they have in there - so - I was definitely looking forward to this night.

I believe they had the perfect amount of people in there to create the potential energy yet not cause overcrowding and ruin the night - however it was just a TAD hot for my liking (I had to remove my underwear and socks with a blowtorch because it had actually started merging with my skin tissue due to the high temperature and ridiculously high humidity)

But, unlike most nights I’ve been to over the years where the memories have just been forgotten in the infinite void of my mind, XLR8 will definitely stand out and its one I shall remember for a long time. I look forward to going to the next one to receive my membership card (applicant's must wear novelty silly jesters hat whilst having photo ID done!)

So yeah - superb night. I loved getting down to hard house again, id forgotten what a fun and energetic style of music it is. Just a great laugh on the dancefloor.

Respecccct! to Ali-G live on stage, the Fridge resident alien, http://www.epidemik.co.uk for running the competition and lastly the two PVC'ed up girls upstairs who thought it would be a laugh to get their t*ts out. Great memories for when I go to bed tonight I can assure you.

Ponder... If it's tourist season, why can't we shoot them?
