UK Dance - Kartouche, Ipswich 30th-Aug-2002

OK, just thought I would do a review of this night in Ipswich which overall was quite entertaining (some moments especially which I will explain later). DJ Sound, myself and some other mates went to this and I must say this was the best night out I have had in Ipswich.

We got to the Kartouche club at about 9:30pm – the place was quite empty in terms of people dancing – but I think they were taking advantage of the relatively cheap drinks at this point. Anyway, when we arrived Ponder was on the decks – quite a surprise really as I wasn’t expecting him to see him play (he wasn’t on the flyer). First tune I heard was ‘Let It Lift’ You remix, which in my opinion was one of the best old 95 tracks. Some good scratching from the man – also good to finally meet you Paul and MC Elmo! :-) He also played 'Higher Love' and some other 95 stuff which got me in the mood to have a good night.

Next up was the one like DJ Breeze. He started off with some oldish dance/hardcore sounds like Hardcore Heaven orig. and other old skool anthems. Moving through the years, he mixed in classics such as ‘Airhead’ remix, ‘Crowd Control’ remix, ‘Body Slam’, ‘The Big Spill’ and ‘Now Is The Time’ remix. At this point there were a few people on the dancefloor – a good set from Breeze. MC Junior, Odyssey and Elmo were all on the mic, and a guy who I think was MC “Darby” ???

After Breeze was Hixxy who we hoped would play new stuff and sure enough we were in for a treat of new hardcore to the max !! ‘Your Shining’, ‘Just Accept it’ remix (TUNE), ‘Heart of Gold’ remix and some “harder” stuff which I am sure will come out on Raverbaby asap. Really good mixing from one of the forefront people in the hardcore scene. Finishing with the original version of ‘Rainbow Islands’, I was havin’ it all the way through his set. Quality!!

Next up was Force and Styles and I did find this set quite amusing. The crowd were loving it, but as with the other two times I have seen these guys play at UKDance, it was the same older tunes from 97 – ‘Pretty Green Eyes’, ‘Cutting Deep’, ‘Shooting Star’ – which all good tunes, but I have heard them soooo many times that I cannot always build up the enthusiasm to dance for the whole hour of them.

So, myself and Sound took the opportunity to say hello to Scott Brown and Hixxy – top geezers. Thanks for the photos and we look forward to seeing the picture of Sound’s UV jacket on your website Scott! :-) :-) Check out our site too for all the photos from the night.

MC Junior was on the mic providing some entertainment to say the least – I am not sure whether it was coming to the end of the set (he thought so but it evidently wasn’t), and I am sure Junior had a “few” drinks, but Junior went up to the DJ booth and grabbed the ‘Heart Of Gold’ record on the deck Styles was playing and stopped it. He then shouted that the crowd noise was shit, so everyone hyped it up. “DJ” Junior then started messing with the record and trying some “scratching” if you could call it that. I sensed this pissed Styles off and sure enough, Styles walked off !!!! Never seen anything like it. Junior was very “apologetic” and the crowd were all shouting for Styles to come back on, but he didn’t come back to the DJ booth. Bad move by Junior that proved that he should may be just MC. Force jumped back on the decks as Junior was getting desperate for Styles to come back on, but he never did. :-(

Anyway, this set came to end and then it was another of the hardcore pioneers to grace the decks – Scott Brown. We never thought we would see Scott Brown in Ipswich – the crowd were loving it and were going mad. He played all new stuff – ‘Catch’ by him and Brisk, his ‘Your Shining’ remix, ‘Power Of Love’ 2002, ‘Blue Room’ (I think), ‘Elysium +’ (wahoo!!) and then finished with some of the best nu style gabba I have heard – ‘Twilight Zone’ (TUNE!!) and his ‘Eyeopener’ remix - Gabba sounds so good on loud sound systems! :-)

Anyway, at 3am, that drew the night to the close and what a good night it was. Looking forward to the next one and let’s hope for another 2002 hardcore lineup! Also, congratulations are in order for DJ Force who Junior “repeatedly” told us had got married (one shout would have done mate ;-)).

We will get some pictures up of the DJ’s and us on our website:
