United States of Hardcore

Uprising, The Adelphi, Sheffield 18th-Jan-2003

Uprising is almost into its ninth year now and is a very well established rave in South Yorkshire. This event was at their original home of The Adelphi and was a special charity night. The entrance fee was a reduced five pounds, all the DJs and MCs were playing for free, and all of the proceeds were going to the Sheffield Childrens Hospital and the Heart Foundation.

The event started at 9pm and I got there about ten minutes after that to find a medium sized queue outside. The doors didn't seem to open until about 9:30 though and then it took another fifteen minutes to get in, so I think a better queuing and searching system would be an advantage here. I was given a reasonably thorough search by the security, dropped off my coat in the cloakroom and went into the venue.

The Adelphi is basically a one room venue with a stage at the front, a raised level all round the edges, plenty of seats and a bar at the back. As soon as I walked in I noticed that it was busy and the attendance on the night was very good, busier than I thought it would be. Due to the long queuing up time I had missed virtually the whole of the first set which was Jake Nicholls, and I just caught him playing K90's "Red Snapper" as his last tune.

Following him came Gaz James and UHF playing back to back. The majority of their set was pounding hardstyle, a music that almost could have been made for Uprising. They played UHF's tune "New City" and then as their last tune UHF did an exclusive first ever play of his brand new tune "Dark Raver" featuring Uprising resident MC Domer. This started off with a really cool drum and bass style intro before going into banging hardcore, and featured loads of Domer lyrics on the record which the crowd obviously really liked.

After them came Uprising resident Spinner and he played a older bouncy hardcore set which contained lots of recognisable tunes including the classic "Jiiieeehhaaaa" by Diss Reaction. Next up was the promoter Topgroove who played a trance set including his usual dropping of "Escape" by Kaycee. Then it was Demand who played a really good set which was my favourite of the night. He dropped in some massive tunes like "You're Shining", "Black magic", "Definition of a Badboy" and "Chase".

The final set of the night was Uprising regular M Zone who played for two hours. He did his usual banging hardstyle set and played a rip of “Insomnia” by Faithless. Unfortunately I had to leave half an hour before the end as someone I was with was bad, which was a shame as I was enjoying M Zone’s set. That bought to an end what was a quality event from Uprising, and the high attendance showed that they still have a big following in South Yorkshire.

The crowd is mostly a local crowd which leads to a friendly atmosphere with no attitude, and everyone is always up for the music. The main reason I like Uprising is that it has a different feel and vibe to hardcore events further south, so is always a refreshing experience. As the Adelphi just has the one room this adds a more intimate feel to the night and means that everyone is always focused on the music.

One criticism I have is that the queuing system to get in could definitely have been a bit faster. Another is that the security could have been a bit friendlier, especially the female toilet attendant/cleaner who was quite snappy. Overall this was a good night though. The next Uprising is their 8th birthday event, which is again here at The Adelphi on Feb 1st.

Shouts to Lee UHF, Sawyer, Dave, Jake Nicholls and Sam, | -_- | and Sam, Spinner and Taff.
