Hardcore Heaven - The Sanctuary 8th-Feb-2003

The return of the legendary name back to its home. The name Hardcore Heaven despite being pretty much in the wilderness for the last few years is still a name all ravers recognise and have fond memories of. There was a real buzz about this night and even beforehand you could tell it was going to be one of those nights not to forget. When arriving at the venue, there was a large queue of expectant ravers outside eager to get in. The security on the night, well some people never noticed them, but other people saw plenty of brutal behaviour from them. It all depends if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time !

No shortcuts had been taken on the effort put into the night by the promoters. The main arena was well done up and production was up to the old Hardcore Heaven standard. DJ Seduction (wherever he is !) would have been proud if he could have seen it :) Backdrops was scattered all over the ceiling and around the walls. Sound and lighting seemed on good form too. The stage was situated so it was facing perpendicular to the balcony and the DJ booth was right at the front of the stage, so the crowd could get a proper look of the DJ and really feed off him.

The arena did seem slightly smaller then usual though, as there was a big stage in the middle of the dancefloor and the merchandise stall was also inside too. But before you knew it, the dancefloor was full and stayed that way all night. The atmosphere on the night was really good. Everyone was up for it and you could almost sense the extra buzz of the ravers on the night. People from all parts of the country, from Scotland to Devon, seemed to have made an effort to come to this.

The lineup had to be changed slightly as Hixxy and Brisk were both double booked to play overseas, and so had to cancel. The first set to seen in the main arena was hard house and Nukleuz legend Andy Farley, and he played a good set including “99.9” and the classic “Are you all ready” by Tony De Vit. Meanwhile in the upstairs arena, Dice and Reality were playing a wicked upfront set to a packed out room. The first hardcore set of the night in the main arena was Dougal and MC Marley. Dougal started off with “You’re Shining” and then played a new trance-led hardcore remix of his own “Love of my life”. He then went on to play “Fire in the sky” and the new remix of “Follow me” by Force and Styles.

Next up came Breeze along with MC Storm and he played his own “Sonic” as well as a new tune which used vocal samples from the old chart song “Sunshine on a rainy day”. Following Breeze at 1.00am came Kevin Energy, with a mostly freeform set. He played “Get more fucked”, the “Crazy Styles” remix, the awesome “Wanna be a DJ” and a new remix of Scott Brown’s “Pilgrim”. For the first half of the set he was accompanied on the mic by Odyssey, and then for the second half Wotsee, who it was great to see booked at a big event like this.

After that was Scorpio upstairs and he played the usual hardcore tekno and gabba selection to a room which was reasonably full. Like Producer on before Scorpio, the whole floor was bouncing up and down, with everyone stomping like nutters. Then it was back downstairs for Scott Brown in the main room. He played a good set including “Elysium plus”, “Definition of a badboy”, “Ghosts”, “Rock you softly” and a few new tunes. Scott Brown was followed by Sy, with MC Storm as always, and Sy started off with his new remix of the old skool anthem “Sweet Harmony”. He then went on to play “Just Play it Loud”, “Neck Breaker”, “Commence” and the Scott Brown remix of “You’re Shining”.

The final set of the night was Demand with Storm and Whizzkid. He started off with “Black magic, Bad magic”, then played “Na na na”, “Feels so real” and “Home”, before finishing the night off with the “Be Angeled” rip. After that original “one more” tune the crowd were demanding yet another one, but the stage manager wouldn’t allow it, so that really was the last tune of the night.

Overall it was a fantastic night, the night really did just fly by, always a sign of a brilliant event. Everyone seemed to have had a wicked time and came out at the end looking forward to the next one. The attendance was very good with The Sanctuary pretty much full, and this proved that the hardcore really is having its time again. The only minus point on the night was the temperature on the dancefloor, it really was getting unbearably hot at times and hopefully can be rectified in the future. But except for that, everything else was spot on and lived up to the Hardcore Heaven expectation. Bring on the next one !!
