Oblivion - Club Destiny, Bournemouth 30th-Jul-2004

Bournemouth’s club scene has long needed a good kick up the arse with its poncy bars, cheesy tunes and pretentious clientele and the Destiny crew look like they have done just that. They have taken the bull by the horns and have bought their very own underground house of fun to blast out the R’n’B capital. With fresh paint, fluffy carpet and brand spanking clean toilets the opening night of Club Destiny was set to start the beginning of a bright and beautiful future. With a few tweaks needing to be made this club has the atmosphere of a proper underground venue – dark, sweltering and full of ravers on a mission.

Oblivion was proud to host the first event and promoter Ed was pleased to be back bringing hardcore to the South Coast. Jedi was the first to kick off the opening extravaganza pumping out his old skool sounds to the filling dance floor. The downstairs room has just the right feel for a hard dance event very dark with a blinding strobe flashing through the smokey air and right from the start of the night the venue was literally on fire. The air conditioning needed some serious cranking up because everyone was drenched but I have it on good authority that little adjustments are going to be made so that you won’t be roasting at the next event.

D-Lyte was next up sounding fresh as ever splicing a range of different sounds together from old skool to hardcore to gabba. It is wicked to hear such a range of different beats in one set and D-Lyte bravely sculpts out a fresh sound for himself. He played ‘Hitmen’ by Robbie Long and Stormtrooper and a Splay and Beats tune called ‘Panic Attack’. It is a refreshing treat to hear a DJ who doesn’t just rinse out all the anthems or just mix up old skool.

Next it was back to the old skool and Druid kept the crowd happy with old classics like ‘Crazy’ and ‘Cold As Ice’. For the 1:00 slot DJ Rapid big name on the London circuit took control and continued the old skool flavour playing ’31 seconds’ and then morphing his set into a more drum and bass sound with the phat d’n’b remix of ‘Ready or Not’. We were also treated to a special preview of the new tune by Jedi and it was fresh of the mixing desk as it was only made the day before. ‘Rock You All Night’ has an old skool vibe with piano breaks and drum and bass beats.

Next it was time to crank it up to dance level 4 and Sy was the perfect man to take you there. The club might have been hotter than eating a vindaloo on a sun bed but the pumping, bouncy sounds of Sy demanded full attention. He packed his set full of upfront tracks like ‘Neck Breaker’ by Plus System, ‘Keep The Crowd Jumping’ by Sy and Unknown and Free Your Mind by CLSM featuring Stephen Booth. This was the point in the night where it was obvious that Club Destiny was the well-needed haven that hardcore has wanted for a long time and the atmosphere was buzzing.

Now the attention was focused on the fact that the familiar faces of the Ratpack hadn’t turned up behind the decks. Jedi stepped in playing the original version of Sweet Harmony but the old skool legends soon showed up after rushing from the airport to make the gig. True to form they played what the crowd are now accustomed to their distinctive selection of old skool. They really take you back to your roots with tracks like ‘Out Of Space’ by The Prodigy and ‘Captain Of The Ship’. They have finally released an album called ‘Ratpack The History’ so their sound has been immortalised forever.

By the end of the night everyone involved was elated with the success of the event and that they’d pulled it off. Co-owner Dylan said “We only got our licence at 1:00 today so everything else had to come 2nd we were still painting an hour before we opened!” Destiny has finally found a new home and the club looks like it’s going to fill a massive void in the hard dance market. It’s great that someone is supporting the scene and taking a risk. This club looks set to rival the fame of other underground venues like Enzos and dare I say the Country Club – can’t wait for more.

The next not to be missed event is on August 13th when Cybrationz takes control. This new freeform night will be seeing Kevin Energy, Sharkey and Jon Doe come down to the seaside town so don’t miss it. The next Oblivion event will be on the 27th September with Hixxy and a welcome return from Ratpack.
