Cybrationz - Club Destiny, Bournemouth 13th-Aug-2004

It doesn’t happen very often but in my twisted logic it works out that about every event in four is a total corker. The 25% of events which totally rock you to the core and give you that all encompassing adrenalin rush are so unbelievably worth it and that is what raving is all about. Cybrationz is the new night to take control of Club Destiny in Bournemouth to bring sheer hardcore excellence to the South Coast. The first event had a line-up to cane any other with Sharkey, Kevin Energy and Jon Doe.

On entering the venue the crowd was a little bit thin on the ground but there was no doubt in my mind that with a line-up like this the club would definitely fill up. The first hour saw DJ Delicious pump up the filling floor with an upfront set of dark edged UK hardcore. Everything seemed like it was against her for the first set of the night with the fire alarm going off half way through the set leaving the dance floor at a stand still and some dodgy sound that was rectified with a quick tweak of the mixer. Joint promoter Low Kapow also told me how it was touch and go about whether she was going to play as an unrecognised phone number meant that she couldn’t be confirmed until two days before the event. Saying all that though she kept the crowd on their toes with tracks like ‘Back and Forth’ by Brisk and Brown and ‘Know The Score’ by Dougal and Gammer.

Next was the start of the two-hour back to back set from Sharkey and Kevin Energy. What else could you expect than sheer unadulterated class. These two fit together like hand in glove with Sharkey steering his tunes towards a darker, stomping nuenergy edge and Kev to a slightly more vocal, trancey nuenergy sound. It is spot on how both have a slightly different influence to their sound as they mesh together superbly and hearing a few tranceier nuenergy tracks was wicked. Every time these two play I am astounded by the vast selection of tunes they pull out of the bag. They always have a fresh new track that I’ve never heard before. I wish I could name all the totally awesome tunes but it is near on impossible as there were so many. Tracks that totally thrashed the pants off the dance floor were ‘Loosing Control’ by Andy Vinal and Matt Style, ‘Can’t Compete’ by Gammer and a wicked German track by Uberdruck and Drugface. They also played a new song with a Queen sample from ‘We Will Rock You’ which just about encompassed exactly what the pair were going to do.

For the next set nothing could prepare me or the rest of the 260 strong crowd for what was about to happen – this in fact happens much less than the one in four rule. Jon Doe took control and played the best set I think I have ever heard in my life. The atmosphere in the room was electric and everyone was going totally mad for it. As an H²0 raver I was absolutely buzzing from all the amazing tracks that he was pumping out. With a CLSM influence to the set he played track after track of sheer brilliance with ‘You Know How To Love Me’ sounding superb and ‘Where The Music Plays’ with its haunting edge. In true Jon Doe stylee he threw in some breakbeat tracks like ‘Drifting Away’ to retain the energy and then he cranked up the pace to the next level with yet more heart stopping build-ups and banging breaks. His last tune was ‘Faces of Angels’ by Doc and Ponder and as his set came to an end all I could keep thinking was I want more. After the set I was totally exhilarated and felt so emotional I actually ran up to Jon and gave him a huge hug. I know one thing for sure I think he is going to be more than welcome back to the South!

Next up was new face to the scene and part promoter DJ Real Play playing his first big set on his 21st birthday. It was going to be hard to follow up such a tremendous set but changing the tone was a definite good move. With a happy hardcore sound it was a technically good set but lacked identity. He played a lot of classic tracks and obvious crowd pleasers like ‘The One’ feat. Lisa Abbott by Euphonic and ‘Heart Of Gold’. He also threw in the wicked remix of ‘Ready or Not’ by Duncan Oatham.

Equilibrium another fresh face to the scene and also another one of the promoters for the new night finished off proceedings. The last set of the night was a change in sound again to the devastating beats of nu skool gabba pioneered in this country by the mastermind of Scott Brown. This set was for the fucking hardcore either that or the lunatic asylum with many a raver faltering at these pounding beats. He played floor flatteners from start to finish with tracks like ‘How Else Can I Say It’ by Scott Brown with the wicked Bubba Sparks sample.

Low Kapow one of the elated promoters from the event said: “Its gotta be the best hardcore Bournemouth has seen for a thirsty long time. It was nail biting to start but special thanks to every raver.” The end of the event, the end of a fantastic night it’s definitely going to be hard to match that one but I can’t wait for them to try!

A thought... Time may be a great healer, but it's also a lousy beautician.
