United States of Hardcore
After attending the last 2 Tasty events and being impressed by both, attending the 3rd birthday seemed...well....obvious! Arriving at 10 minutes before the advertised starting time, the place was deserted apart from Scottie B and 2 other ravers standing outside. By 9 there was a queue of about 20 and it crossed my mind that it might be a quieter night that the others. After a thorough yet quick search I paid the £10 admission..(what? £10? BONUS!)...and continued up to the hardcore room. Kicking things off was Mikee K who was joined by ScottieB and Spenno 'pon the m-i-c. Always nice to see some fresh talent that you won't see every week playing a set that you won't see every week, Mikee dropped Toytown, takin' me higher, discoland and that tune with the Ozzy Osbourne vocal "new years day"; amongst others in a set that was well recieved and a fantastic warm up for the acts to follow. A little walk around the arena's left me wondering why one could not buy a whistle anywhere...i wasn't the only one either, the whistle crew were a lot quieter than usual and the screamers were a lot louder. After a brief yet enjoyable trance experiance with Alex Calver in the Trance room, the Hyper zone called. Heading back down, Robbie Long was keeping things rolling with a breakbeat set featuring Scottie at first then Ethos on the mic. Not being a regular listener to breakbeat, I only recognised "Feelin' Funky" but there were many other tunes that hit hard. I must remember to make sure I listen to breakbeat more. Robbie made way for Cris E Manic. Witnessing her at the last Tasty was another reason why more promoters should bring through new talent. manic by name, Manic by DJ. Cris E slammed the dancefloor with tune after tune after tune. Midnight. Breeze. Other the last couple of months Breeze's set make-up for me has changed for the better differentiating his style clearly from that of his partner in crime, Styles. "Crazy Love(remix)" "Now is the Time" "Electric(remix)" "Your my Angel" and "Pro*toplasm*" were squeezed between a set that could only be matched that night by Billy Bunters. Having been out the night before, a brief rest called. Staying only for Uplift's first tune, "Injected with a Poison(htid remix)". I made my way up to the seated area outside the other 2 arena's. Not the ideal place for a seating area, but as Mass isn't a big arena compared to those of Shepton Mallet, it didn't really bother me. Again, on this night I felt that a lot of ravers in the hardcore room could have had better manners. After 10 months solid of nothing but politeness and friendliness from everyone at each and every rave I'd attended, 2 events in a week where people where happy to barge past without a words apology or gratitude for moving out the way, bothered me. No-one else there seemed to notice it at all, but personally being shoved out the way by a raver not wearing a shirt, covered in sweat pulling a girl behind him is not what I never thought I'd experience in a hardcore room. I try not to be positive about the scene, but for me recently the PLUR side of things have fallen a bit below hardcore level. Judging by the people's attire and enthuisiam towards the music, I can only guess that they had come for the night, not the hardcore. Maybe its me being moany and I don't like judging them, but what else can I say. Anyways, I decided to forget about it, relax and have a great night. Billy Bunter's set at experiMENTAL only 1 month ago will always be remembered by me as one of the best sets I've ever seen. Accompanied by Spenno, Bunter whipped through a classics/upfront set featuring "Toytown" "Partytime(remix)" "Heart of Gold" then onto newer tunes such as "Your Shining." Another memorable set from the man of versatility himself. In my opinion, Kev Energy is technically the best DJ on the hardcore block. "Adaggio" was the only tune I remember due to a nasty headache. I carried on dancing of course and lost my thoughts into the world of freeform at its best. Energy, in my mind, is still the most exciting DJ going...probably equal with Scott Brown I suppose...thats my opinion anyway. Sedders steps up to the plate and as expected plays an upfront bouncathon accompanied by the Skillector himself, Whizzkid. A set that seemed to fly by, had me dancing all the way through despite tiredness. (Un-drug relatedly) Losing all memory of where I was, is proof that I was well into the tunes and subsequentally don't remember a single tune. Maybe I'll take a notepad next time...hehe! 5 am...the crowd had thinned long before now and subsequentally what was left was a very sweaty group of ravers ready to sing along, bounce along and have a wicked time. I should mention that from about 4am onwards the manners of the people remaining was impeccable.Respect. Only 2 men could take this set of ravers deeper on the musical mission, and that was clearly Sy and Storm. Time for the power hour man! After 9 hours straight of raving, 45 mins was all I could manage and I regretfully left after hearing SY bust out his usual "slammer after slammer after bloodclot slammer". heh. at this point I was absolutely knackered beyond belief and had to leave. Well,well,well....big up to the Tasty promoters for again showing why Spenno can confidently claim it to be London's best rave, a wicked night out each and every time. Security were present but not overwhelming and always friendly, chatting and busting out the occasional dance move. If you're reading this and haven't been to a Tasty yet,the next one is December 11th (includes 2 hour CLSM,Bunter,Roosta and Kutski vs Nu-Energy Live PA!!! as well as a wicked hardcore room lineup.) I know I'll be there. Shouts to ScottieB, Whizzkid,Spenno and the couple from Slade Green...BIG UP YOU 2!!
