Helter Skelter 27th-Mar-1999

Here was yet more proof that skelter is the best event there is on the rave circuit. This was a wicked night and one of the best ones I've been to.

I arrived at 7:00 and got into the complex at about 7:45. I was surprised to find that one of the security guards was being friendly and cracking jokes with us. However I heard that the rest of them were being their usual clumsy aggressive selves.

The first set was Breeze and he was quite good. Alongside him was MC Whizzkid and he is fast becoming one of my favourite MCs. Next up was Sharkey in the Rollers. This was pretty full, showing how popular he is at the moment. Sharkey played a fairly good set although I'm not a massive trance fan.

I then went to the meet up to say hello to a few people. Hi to Smithers, Roo, Charm, the bloke from S-Scape (is it Paul?), Sam and of course my mate DJ TIME. Nort forgetting Adidas Matt who I apparently forgot to mention on my Hardcore Heaven review. Sorry about that mate. I saw the last 15 minutes of Vinylgroover then went across to the Rollers for what I thought was DJ Seduction. It turned out that Sy and Seduction had swapped sets for some reason. Sy and Storm always do a brilliant set and this was no exception. The Rollers was packed with everyone making loads of noise. Sy played some wicked tunes including a hardcore remix of "No Good (Start the Dance)" by the Prodigy. Seduction was up next and he played a classic anthems set. I was worried that this would be an Old Skool set but it turned out to be a selection of tunes from around 96-97. This was something different and was for me one of the best sets of the night.

Back to the Sanctuary for Force and Styles with MC Junior. This was also packed and although they played their usual vocally selection it was good to see Junior again. I saw my mate Michelle up on stage which was good as I didn't think she was at the event. A big hello to her.

Brisk was up next and he was fairly good but I've heard him do better sets. Rat Pack followeed doing their usual old skool set.

One of the strangest sets of the night was Dougal and Hixxy back2back. Dougal would put on a happycore track and Hixxy would mix in a trance track. This carried on for the entire set. Unfortunately someone collapsed in this set but I think they were okay afterwards.

Slipmatt came next and although I didn't see all of his set the parts I did see were good. I then stopped in the Rollers to have my helping of D and B for the evening. DJ Hype was playing and it was quality drum and bass.

I went into the Sanctuary to see the end of Mark EG and M Zone and I could not believe what I saw. Mark EG had bought a spare deck along which he picked up and threw onto the stage. He then picked up a shovel he had also bought along and started smashing the record deck with it. The guy is crazy and everyone was just standing there open mouthed.

The best was to come though with Vibes and Live Lee. One of the best things about Live Lee is the amount of shout outs he does. All through the set his hands were full of pieces of paper but he kept reading them because he is so friendly. That is the reason why everybody likes him so much. Take note MC Storm. Vibes played a good selection of tunes although critics of his style would probably say it was a bit cheesy. I think they are both hardcore legends. The very last song they played was the original "Discoland" which is my all time favourite hardcore tune.

The taps were sometimes turned off but the only criticism I can make is that throughout the night the sound system wasn't very good which is unusual for skelter.

Respect is due to Helter Skelter, undoubtedly England's number one.

A thought... The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing in the right place, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.
