Getting there............
Unless you know bristol well, bring your maps. The depot is a absolute cunt to find on the outskirts of town. Three
lane crossovers at roundabouts are the key to finding this place. Eventually managed to follow some local bloke to
the venue. Whoever you are, you're a saviour.
The venue..........
The depot is best described as not the biggest of places. There were three main rooms and a small chill out in the
basement. The top floor was the wimps room (ie chill out) and was equiped with about 12 pool tables - you've
come to rave not hustle. The main room was quite small and became very, very hot after 12pm. The music policy
here was happy hardcore or house paced hardcore when dougal played. Dancing here became hard without
getting in someone's way or getting hit yourself. The other room in the basement was a lot more spaceous and
music policy here was strictly old skool, as Ribbs would say "woooh hoooooo"
Music...........
There were some early techincal faults in the main room, which pissed a few DJ's off, this seemed to be sorted
out by the middle of the night though. The needle didn't want to stay in the same plac too long and started
jumping with the music.
Dancing in the main room became too much of a health hazard due to flying arms everywhere so I mainly relived
the olden golden tunes of yesteryear downstairs. My fav individual sets were:
Brisk (main room), surprise, surprise mr brisk runs the show yet again. Missed the first quarter due to
reasons I'll explain later. Managed to get on stage (cheers andy hyperactive) and fully witness the crowd
reaction. Played a few dubs in the set giving us a taste of the future along with some wicked stomping
choonz.
Cally (main room) again, as was the case at dreamscape, the fast trance went down a treat with the well
up for it crowd. Dodgy needles interprupted the set in a couple of places but with the music well stompy did
anyone really care?
That was really about how much I could take in the main room, venturing in now and again but it was like a sauna
and when dougal played...........no comment.
The old skool room was absolutely slamming all night with all the favorites of the past being relived. nice sets from
the local bristol boy sensation and the previously unheard pressure. The two dj's that rocked the main room
carried their talents over into the old skool room.
Cally (old skool) - started off with the original dutch version of "Forever Together" (not the hixxy version
that everyone knows) old techno style stomp and it set the tone for the way ahead, or what I heard of it.
Had to tear myself away as brisk was ripping up the show upstairs. Also showing off with some wicked
scratching. Time period of tunes 94-95 and few 96 at the end apparently. Played one of my all time favs -
rabbit city 7 (for the ones of you like stormski and don't know your tunes - panic "feel the, feel the, feel the
panic")
Brisk (old skool) - not content with his previous performance upstairs, brisk played 95 breakbeat style, but nice and fast (even faster than dougal's set upstairs). With the crowd lapping it up like dehydrated cats.
Sy (old skool) - last set, who else could finish off the night! All the classics, "Your Love" "Hurt you so" "edge1" and the more commercial "outer space"(prodigy) and "trip to trumpton" [you gotta know them stormski :))] . With scratching aswell I'm not sure if the best had been saved to the end.
A special shout here must go to shaun (dunno where from) who simply danced and sung along to almost every song and didn't leave the dancefloor. A true old- skooler.
Overall......................
Better than the previous event, and more people in attendance. The way ahead? A few people complained that there was no techno (unlike the last event where the room was run by Hybrid) but the old skool was so good I
certainly wasn't complaining.
Shouts to.........................
All the usual mob who were there....... Paul, Martin & his misses (ID Concept Dancers), the barry boys, Ian
(Cally), Alex, Caerphilly boys - Nathan (MC Complete) and birthday boy Alex, the swansea lasses Donna and Nat,
all the Welsh boys inside, the early lightweights john (stormski) and rolf (hagar) home at twelve, are you cinderella
or something?, andy & paul - hyperactive, khi, vince (mc quarter?), MC's dee and fugitive (and fugitive's mum),
ros ginger moley & the brunel crew, and to anyone I've missed out, sorry too many to remember.
Adios amigos......Next one 25th April
