United States of Hardcore
Well, as it was the first event I had been to in over a year, I was kinda apprehensive about this. When got the Que club via the pub at around 9:30pm, when the doors were supposed to open. Unfortunately they decided to keep us all waiting till nearer 10pm, but there wasn't a huge queue and once things got moving we got in really quickly. I had never been to the Que club before, so it was well surprising to find out how big it was inside. We handed our jackets in did a quick look at the playlist and made our way into the main arena. The first thing we noticed was the good soundsystem, plenty of bass, nice and clear...and LOUD! Food Junky was on at the time (if my memory serves) and was playing a good selection of tracks from 92-94, with stuff like Awesome 3 - Don't Go, Charly (in fact loads of Prodigy stuff). This served to get the crowd going and we were soon all jumping up and down like loonies. We stayed in the main arena for a good 2 hours before we checked out the other rooms. There was also a hip-hop area which seemed to be pretty deserted most of the night, but there was a bar there so we could easily get our water etc etc. Congrats to the Que Club for having plenty of bar staff! At around 1:30 we checked out the drum and bass room which was nearly empty, so we gave up and took in Seductions set, which was storming. By this time the entire arena was completely packed and suitably sweaty. After Seduction came Ratty, oh no, what a shame! We were expecting some speedy Basement records mixes from Ratty, and although he did finish up that way, he slowed everything right down at the start. After the energy of Seductions set, it was a let down. After chilling for a bit, getting some food and talking we tried out the drum and bass room...what a transformation! Pilgrim was on the decks playing some classic old dnb choons, like Scotty, the Dred Bass, Terminator etc etc. It was amazing, even though we were all tired we danced for another couple of hours solid. Then it was back to the main arena for Mistress Mo, I personally wasn't enjoying her set so we went to the hip-hop room and chilled a bit more. Mickey Finns set...hmmm, all classic anthems and rewind after rewind....too much! A real shame. Once Sy came on at 4:30, we were totally knackered so we bowed out after a half hour, but his set was pretty wicked all the same. Overall, a very up for it crowd, 90% of people had glowsticks and were waving them like nutters. The effect of 500 people on the balconies was something to behold. The vibe was really good, not all huggy like you would expect, but I would guess that's because there was an older crowd overall. MC Lenni and Robbie Dee also worked hard on the mic (Lenni being my particular fave). It was also nice to see things being sold for decent prices, 1.50 for a bottle of water, 2 quid for beer.... Now the bad bit. The security (for one reason or another) kept moving people on, when we were chilling in the corridors. There wasn't a chillout room we could find, and this was the only place we could cool down. Apart from that, everything else was wicked. They could possibly have done with some lazers in the main arena, but other than that the lights etc were very good. Looking forward to the next one and meeting up with the oldskool list crew once again!
