United States of Hardcore

Slammin' Vinyl 3rd-Sep-1999

Well I am recovered from the excesses of Friday night now and here is my lengthy Slammin' review. My missus and I arrived at Kings Cross station at about 9.40, plenty of time we thought so after searching for a cash machine we eventually arrived outside Bagleys at 10.15. Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiitttt look at the queue!!! This was to be our occupation for the next two hours. Bumped into Sam, Rob, Peter etc in the queue and thought we'd be in within an hour, maybe intime for the start of Vibes. No chance mate.

By the time I got in Vibes was part way through his hardcore set and in true Vibes fashion was whipping the crowd into a frenzy with some mighty cheese alongside some quality tracks. Is it me or is it hot in here?? After losing a stone to Vibes we went to te meet-up where I met loads of chaps for the first time and some from previous encounters.

Got off to a blinder with Paul who, when asking me how old I thought he was, looked cheesed off when I replied 27 (inside knowledge heh!). Anyway after chilling outside in the freezing cold it was time to venture inside into the furnace that was Bagleys. We were supposed to be going to the techno room but got lost (not for the first time that night) and ended up in the old skool room or should I say broom cupboard.

Nevermind, it was Jimmy J playing some breakbeaty classics from 1994ish which suited me down to the ground. Great set. Right, lets try out the drum and bass room. Sorry the drum and bass steam room. Lots of Swedish types walking round in towels was what I was expecting but there were people still managing to dance in there. I lost two stone in the 5 minutes it took me to walk through.

Well off to the hardcore room it was and Brisk was treating the masses with a great fast set which was my fave set of the night. Managed to keep going till the end and then stumbled off to the old skool room for the end of Clarkees set. Swan E followed and played an old skool drum and bass set which was okay but I wanted some more 1992 sounding stuff.

Nevermind. Back to the hardcore room where Vinyltrixta and Hixxy were ripping it up with some nice choonage. By this time the missus was getting knackered so we chilled out in the oldskool room for a bit where I recieved a raving first. A flying headbut from some poor lass who lost her footing whilst trying to sit in the space next to me. No damage done (except to her pride) and I am not sure who was playing at this point. Was it still Swan-E or was it Sy? I dunno but it was still old jungle stuff.

Right the last hour was approaching and it meant it was time for Sy and Unknown. They performed their usual class set with both of them looking like they were enjoying themselves scratching the crowd into a frenzy. Of course there was the customary Storm versus Sy scratching at the end of the set which I'll give the decision to Sy. But it all ended at 5.45. Cheated out of 15 minutes more hardcore!!

Well overall, after eventually getting into the bloody place, it was a good night (if a little hot) and giving it it's due the garage room was quite full all night so all credit to them (you still wont catch me in there). Set of the night IMO was between Brisk and Jimmy J. I didn't get a chance to really review the D&B room due to furnace like conditions but I managed smelt myself a nice sword in there:-)

I never found the techno room or the house room. Anyway big shouts to Sam, Rob, Kev, Paul, Peter, Taffy, Andrew, Charm, Caine and the rest for turning up to the meet-up (where were you Chrissy?? and you Dave Curran??). See you at the next one:-))))))) Bouncey bloke:-)
